Did you know that snacking can help you lose weight? When we think of snacking, we might think of just eating snacks all day that just pack on calories and have no value. Certainly, that could happen, but it doesn’t have to if you plan your snacks well.

On average, snacking accounts for about a quarter of your calories per day. And it is important to snack. Strategic snacking can help you lose weight as opposed to restricting your diet to only 2-3 meals a day. New research shows that spacing your food intake to about every 3 hours actually helps keep your metabolism working well and avoids drops and spikes of your blood sugar and insulin levels. This results in you feeling less hungry and keeping your energy at a nice consistent level.

Snacking can help you lose weight if you first of all then plan to snack at strategic times during the day. For example, if you eat breakfast at 6am, have a small snack at 9am, eat lunch at 12, snack at 3pm and eat dinner at 6pm. This is just a guideline of course, but having 3 smaller meals per day with a couple added snacks in between can help you lose weight and feel better.

So, what should these snacks be? Well of course, it is still best to avoid high calorie, high sugar or highly processed foods. It is not to say that you can’t have a small sweet snack though now and then or your snack can’t include that. How about a piece of fruit and a piece of cheese? Or some crackers and cheese? Fruit offers some fluid and fiber, both of which will help to keep you satisfied. If you add a protein source to that, even better.

There is a study that backs up that snacking can help you lose weight. In one 2009 study, researchers reviewed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2004 that looked at adults with patterns of skipping meals and those with patters of snacking. The researchers found that snacking was more prevalent in groups of women who were of normal weight or had recently lost weight compared with overweight women. With a little planning, snacking can help you lose weight.
