    Sleep Loss Increases Risk of Weight Gain

    Not enough sleep could mean too much weight, according to a new study by the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar.

    Researchers found that losing just a half an hour of sleep a night could lead to weight gain.

    According to the study, losing sleep can disrupt your metabolism, and create problems with your blood sugar, therefore increasing your chances of diabetes.

    “Sleep loss is widespread in modern society, but only in the last decade have we realized its metabolic consequences,” Shahrad Taheri, a professor of medicine at Weill Cornell, said.

    “Our findings suggest that avoiding sleep debt could have positive benefits for waistlines and metabolism, and that incorporating sleep into lifestyle interventions for weight loss and diabetes might improve their success,” Taheri added.

    The researchers advised against forfeiting sleep during the week and trying to make up for it on the weekend.

    Instead, they say it’s better to try to get enough sleep every night.
